Dental Digestion: How Does Oral Health Affect My Metabolism?

Summer has arrived, and if you’re like many others, you’ve been spending more time at the gym, so you feel confident in your swimsuit. Did you know, though, that proper preventative dental care can help keep you in shape?

It may come as a shock to learn that there’s a connection between your oral health and your metabolism. However, studies have linked gum disease with increased occurrences of metabolic syndrome. Continue reading to learn more about how consistently cleaning your teeth can help you manage your weight!

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome refers to a condition in which your body develops insulin resistance, which leads to a range of systemic health concerns, like diabetes and heart problems. This hormone helps regulate your blood sugar levels and plays a crucial role in delivering glucose to your cells to be used as energy. Once your system develops resistance, it can’t effectively use sugar for fuel, and it stores the excess as fat. This, in turn, can result in weight gain around your midsection.

How Does Oral Health Affect Metabolic Syndrome?

Several scientific studies over the past decade have established a connection between periodontitis and other serious medical issues. This is because gum disease is considered an infectious as well as chronic inflammatory disease. It occurs when bacteria in your mouth penetrate the soft connective tissues around your teeth and cause an infection. It triggers an immune response that increases your body’s insulin resistance and alters the gut’s microbiome, contributing to metabolic syndrome.

How Can I Prevent Gum Disease?

If you’re concerned about weight gain, you may be eager to try everything you can to keep from gaining a few extra pounds. Gum disease has been directly linked with insulin resistance, which means preventing it can potentially improve your metabolism and help you shed extra fat. Fortunately, avoiding gum disease is relatively simple. You should implement a twice-daily dental hygiene routine that consists of thoroughly brushing your teeth for a full two minutes, followed by flossing. This removes plaque buildup and bacteria that lead to oral problems.

You should also visit your dentist for a routine checkup and cleaning every six months. Even if you’re devoted to your daily dental care regimen, there are places in your mouth that are harder to see or reach to clean. Your provider knows how to spot early signs of potential issues and address them before they can progress.

Preventing gum disease is a great way to keep your whole body happy this summer!
