Traveling for the Holidays? Here’s How to Take Care of Your Teeth on the Move

Grocery stores and shopping malls aren’t the only things that get crowded during the holiday season – the roads and airports are equally as packed! If you are planning on leaving town, it’s important that you pack everything you need to take care of your teeth while you’re away. Otherwise, you run the risk of starting 2025 with a mouthful of cavities. If you aren’t sure where to begin, read on for four helpful tips.

Tip #1: Pack Your Toothbrush in Your Carry-On

If you’ve traveled during the holidays before, you know to be prepared for everything – from delayed flights to lost luggage. The best thing to do is keep some essentials, like a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste, in your carry-on. That way, you’re never left in a pinch. Whether you need to brush your teeth on the plane or once you arrive at your destination, everything you need will be easily accessible and, therefore, excuse-proof.

Tip #2: Make Water Your Drink of Choice

Peppermint mochas, hot chocolate, and eggnog are seasonal staples for many. Unfortunately, they are loaded with added sugar, which increases your risk of tooth decay. Don’t worry – that doesn’t mean you have to steer clear of delicious beverages like these altogether. Instead, indulge sparingly and make water your drink of choice the majority of the time. Not only is it sugar-free, but it will help you stay hydrated and prevent dental discoloration!

Tip #3: Bring Sugar-Free Gum

Ideally, you’ll be able to brush your teeth after each meal or snack to prevent food particles from lingering on your teeth for hours on end. That said, there are some cases where that’s not realistic, like if you’re experiencing a bit of turbulence on your flight. The good news is that chewing on some sugar-free gum can help remove lingering residue from your teeth while also keeping your breath minty-fresh. So, bring a pack or two with you!

Tip #4: Don’t Forget to Floss

Remember, brushing alone only cleans about 60% of the surface of your teeth. That’s why flossing is so important, even on the road! It’s also a good idea to bring a travel-sized bottle of mouthwash with you. That way, you can complete every step of your oral hygiene regimen whether you’re at a hotel off the highway, you’re on a plane, or you’ve arrived at your destination.
