The human body as a whole is a complex system that is made up of dozens of smaller systems that are equally complex. Two of those are the small joints that allow you to effortlessly open and close your mouth. Most of us take these joints—properly called temporomandibular joints, or TMJs—for granted. However, let one or both malfunction and you suddenly become very aware of their significance to daily function. To treat TMJ, Crown Point residents know they can count on Berquist Family Dentistry.
What causes TMJ?
The temporomandibular joints are located on either side of your face just in front of both ears. They consist of muscle, ligament, cartilage and bone. TMJ disorder can result after an injury to your teeth or jaw, persistent teeth grinding, bite misalignment, stress, poor posture, gum chewing or as a consequence to arthritis.
What are the symptoms of TMJ?
The temporomandibular joints allow you to move your lower jaw up and down, backward and forward and side-to-side. One of the primary symptoms of TMJ disorder is pain when you move your jaw to eat, speak, yawn or laugh. Some people report a dull pain, while others feel a sharp and stabbing pain.
Other symptoms include:
- A clicking or popping sound when you open or close your mouth
- Ear pain without an infection
- Feeling as if your jaw is locked or stuck
- Frequent headaches
- Swelling on the side of your face
Treating TMJ in Whiting
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, then scheduling a diagnostic appointment with Dr. Robert Berquist or Dr. Daniel Berquist may be the best idea. Our dentists will be able to assess your circumstance and recommend the best course of treatment.
We rely on non-surgical procedures to help alleviate the pain and discomfort of TMJ. One highly effective option is an oral appliance that is worn to correct the underlying alignment concern. This appliance is made of smooth plastic and is custom designed to fit comfortably in your mouth. When worn regularly, patients report a reduction in the severity of symptoms and for some the pain and discomfort of TMJ completely disappear.
